You almost certainly have relevant experience — it just does not have the job title attached yet. Here is how to find it, evidence it, and handle the gap honestly.
Name the role and where the overlap is, in the first two lines
Do not open with an apology for what you lack. Open with the job title and the closest thing you have actually done — coursework, a part-time job, volunteering, a personal project, military service or caring responsibilities all count when described concretely.

Pick the two requirements you can genuinely evidence
Read the posting and choose the two bullets you can back with a real example. Ignore the rest. Two proven claims beat six vague ones, and it keeps the letter honest.
3
Prove each one with a specific, measurable story
Scope makes an example credible: how many people, how much money, how long, what changed. “Managed the till on Saturdays” becomes “Handled £2,000 of daily takings solo and trained two new starters on the system.”
4
Address the biggest gap once, without dwelling on it
One sentence: name the gap, then say what you are doing about it — a course in progress, a certification booked, a project you built to learn the tool. Hiring managers respond far better to that than to silence.
5
Close with availability and a clear ask
State when you can start and ask for a conversation. No “I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience.”

Both are written to the method above. Notice that the gap is named once and then left alone, and that every claim carries a number.
Student applying for a first office role
Dear Ms Adeyemi,
I am applying for the Administrative Assistant role at Northgate Clinic. I finish my Business Administration diploma in June and have spent the last eighteen months doing much of this work part-time.
Your posting leads with scheduling and record accuracy. At my college's student services desk I managed a shared calendar for four advisers, booking roughly 60 appointments a week with under 2% double-bookings across the year. I also rebuilt our paper intake form as a digital one, which cut check-in time from about six minutes to two.
I have not worked in a clinical setting, so patient-records procedure would be new to me. I have completed the free HIPAA-basics course to make the first week easier.
I can start the week of 12 June and would be glad to talk.
Sincerely,
Ruth Cardoso · 555-0142 · ruth.cardoso@email.com
Career changer moving into a new field
Dear Mr Whyte,
I am applying for the Junior Data Analyst role at Meridian Logistics. I have spent seven years in retail operations, the last three as a store manager — which is where I started doing this job before it had the title.
Your posting asks for SQL and dashboard reporting. I taught myself SQL to stop waiting on head office for numbers, and built a weekly stock-and-staffing dashboard in Power BI that our four-store region adopted; it cut overtime spend by 11% over two quarters. Your second requirement, translating analysis for non-technical stakeholders, is what I did every week with store teams who had no interest in a query.
I have not worked with Python or a formal data warehouse. I am two-thirds through the Google Data Analytics certificate and expect to finish it next month.
Sincerely,
Daniel Okonjo · 555-0187 · d.okonjo@email.com
Common questions
How do I write a cover letter with no work experience?
Treat non-job experience as experience: coursework, projects, volunteering, sport, caring responsibilities and part-time work all demonstrate real skills when you describe scope and outcome. Pick the two requirements from the posting you can genuinely evidence, prove each with one specific story, name your biggest gap once, and close with your availability.
Should I admit I have no experience?
Do not lead with it or apologise for it, but do address it once, plainly, and say what you are doing to close it. Pretending the gap is not there is worse — the reader has your resume in front of them.
What counts as experience if I have never had a job?
Coursework and capstone projects, volunteering, student societies, sport and team leadership, freelance or family-business work, self-taught projects, and certifications. What makes them count is describing the scope and result, not the label.
How long should an entry-level cover letter be?
Shorter than a senior one — around 200 to 300 words, three paragraphs. There is less to say and padding is obvious.
Can AI write my cover letter if I have no experience?
It can structure and phrase it, but it should never invent achievements to fill the gap. Hirelu drafts only from what your resume actually contains and leaves unsupported claims as bracketed prompts, precisely because a fabricated example collapses in the first interview question.
Not sure your resume shows the overlap?
Run it through a free check first — the same transferable experience that carries the letter needs to be visible on the resume behind it.
